BIG-hearted Phillip Schofield offered to pay a struggling This Morning viewer’s £700 electricity bill.
He told the pensioner, who was left unable to eat or sleep with worry because of the huge fee: “If the worst comes to the worst, we’ll pay it for you.”
Patricia in Norfolk was landed with a £701.85 bill after switching energy companies – because she didn’t know how to read the meter.
The 73-year-old hadn’t been sending in gas or electricity readings to her supplier because she couldn’t understand them, saying sadly: “I don’t know how.”
Poor Patricia, who was at her wit’s end before calling the show, told 58-year-old Phillip: “It’s causing me not to eat or sleep.”
He host replied sternly: “No, no no no. Don’t do that. Listen, one way or the other we’ll fix this for you.”
He gestured across the panel, which included co-host Holly Willoughby, 39, and Martin Lewis, 48, saying: “If the worst comes to the worst we’ll pay it for you.”
Patricia replied: “Thank you very much. I’m so glad I got through to you.”
She explained she was landed with the estimated bill after trying to switch to a cheaper energy supplier for her gas and electricity.
Money saving expert Martin Lewis, who was also helping worried viewers with their problems promised that someone on his team would help her too.
He assured Patricia: “If nobody knows how much you’re using, the bills can’t be right.”
One viewer tweeted: “God love her, hope Patricia sorts her bill out” while another wrote: “Poor Patricia, it’s not her fault she can’t read a metre.”
A third posted: “Awe, bless Patricia. Glad they will sort it for her. Now I’m concerned though asi don’t give meter reading either.”
