What is it?
The brand new Tucson is a bit bigger than the outbound design (20mm longer, all of which appears to go into rear leg room) and it has a brand-new, rakish design style that raises it out of the crowd. Its 4.5 m overall length fits nicely in between a Nissan Qashqai and Volvo XC40.
Theres less choice if you desire a four-wheel-drive Tucson. Youre limited to the spec of our test cars and truck, a 178bhp moderate hybrid whose effective and smooth transverse 1.6-litre four-cylinder fuel engine is assisted by a 48V incorporated starter-generator driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Its fulltime four-wheel drive, like its lots of competitors, bristling with traction controls and a selectable hill descent function.
Hyundais family-sized Tucson SUV is its very popular design to date, now in its 4th generation considering that its 2004 debut, so you d expect it to come in a lot of versions. The majority of are two-wheel drive, however there are standard gas and diesel powertrains, lots of mild hybrids, a number of levels of full hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid a few months away.
Whats it like?
Our test car was a top-spec Ultimate, total with an outstanding security bundle, lots of driver-assist electronics and well-organised audio and environment touch controls in 2 10.25 in screens in the centre of the dashboard. Theres a highly configurable twin-dial motorist display, whose style and colour modifications with the driving modes– Eco, Normal and Sport.
The Tucson is among those vehicles with which you feel quickly familiar. The only moderate criticism we have is that the front wheels often scrabble a bit on quick departures while the rear wheels are receiving the message that theyre expected to drive, too.
Chauffeurs not familiar with what a 48V starter-generator can contribute will be amazed by this cars and trucks smoothness, its high tailoring when cruising and its urgent off-the-mark low-speed velocity. Steering is accurate but light and the vehicle trips comfortably on motorways.
