Action Fraud has published a number of tips which could help Britons to protect themselves.
The reporting centre says if a person receives an unexpected phone call, text message or email that asks for their personal or financial details, they should remember to stop, challenge and protect.
“Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe,” said Action Fraud.
“Could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.”
