President Biden had just entered the Oval Office when Harry sent his timely gesture of support. It isn’t the first time he or Meghan have interfered in US politics. In September, as the presidential election approached, the couple made veiled anti-Trump remarks, including the need to “reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity”.
Now the political ground has shifted. With Trump gone, might the incoming president and vice-president be more inclined to take notice of those whose views reflect their own?
By coincidence, Biden was snapped passing a photograph of Harry, taken in 2013 at Arlington National Cemetery.
As vice-president in the Obama administration, Biden met Harry several times and gave his support to Harry’s Invictus Games. The new First Lady, Jill Biden, even travelled to London to cheer the US team at the inaugural Games in 2014. Some regard the Bidens as friends of Harry. For royals, friendship is one thing, partisan support is quite another.
Last year, when they unceremoniously departed as senior royals, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex promised to “continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty”, and that means staying out of national politics.
However, Harry and Meghan are writing their own rules. Some of their online presentations and interviews appear ill-judged and often amateurish, with the danger of huge embarrassment for the Queen.
Distanced in time and geography from the heart of the Royal Family, the Sussexes move ever away from the Queen’s model of non-interference in politics.
While she became friendly with the Obamas, Trump was later given a state visit and a palace banquet in accordance with his position as US President. That is the Queen’s way, but not the Sussexes’, who refused to meet Trump.
Meghan is now said to hold political ambitions of her own. There is a tenuous link between Meghan and Vice-President Kamala Harris, through Kamala’s husband, Douglas Emhoff, managing director of law firm Venable LLP’s West Coast offices. And Venable’s lawyer Marjorie Witter Norman just happens to be Meghan’s trademark attorney…
Meghan is never one to miss an opportunity. Watch this space.
