For now it is unclear how or if the spin-off will have any connection to the original series, a source told the website.

‘I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,’ Hilary said of the role.

‘As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby. Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius,’ she said of executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger.

‘Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!’

‘We are beyond excited to be bringing How I Met Your Father to Hulu,’ said executive producers and writers Isaac and Elizabeth . ‘Carter and Craig’s iconic original series revolutionized the half-hour comedy, and we are so honored to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation – and with Hilary Duff no less!

‘We can’t wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City. And we hope nobody thinks it’s weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff’s voice.’

Shortly after news of the spin-off broke, Hilary took to Instagram to gush about her new role.

Hilary was working on a Lizzie McGuire spin-off these last few years and attempted to have the show move from Disney+ to Hulu in order to create a more ‘adult-themed’ series, according to Variety.

However, that project ultimately never went forward.

How I Met Your Mother aired from 2005 to 2014 and starred Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby, a young man living in New York and looking for his other half.

The series was narrated by Bob Saget, who voiced an older Ted reflecting on how he met his wife to their children.

The show also chronicled the adventures of Ted’s friends, played by Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, and Alyson Hannigan.

The critically-acclaimed series was the recipient of numerous awards during it’s nine year run, including multiple Emmy awards.

So far, no release date has been announced for the upcoming spin-off.
